Photography : the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (as film or an optical sensor).
Digital Photography is a year long course that focuses on understanding the basic operations and functions of a digital single lens reflex camera and the manipulation of its settings to achieve a specific result. Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition and editing. They will explore the history of photography, learning about its scientific and technological developments, important innovators in the field, and relevance within diverse cultural contexts. Students will write and speak about aesthetic, technical and expressive qualities in a photograph, learning to critique their own and others work. Students learn image techniques and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop Elements 13. Students will learn how to manage and creatively alter digital images as well as critically analyze the use of visual media as a means of communication in our society today. They will be provided a greater level of autonomy, expected to pursue their own interests and develop an individual voice. Students will explore the significance of photography within the larger context of the art word, and learn about the critical and varied application it has to the modern working world.
Course Fee: $30.00 covers the cost and use of Digital Single-Lens Reflex Camera (Nikon L110) as well as ink and paper to make archival ink jet prints or color laser prints.
Course Commitment: To fully gain an understanding of Photography you must take photos. Students will need to commit to a minimum of 3 hours a week of shooting time as homework. This is your chance to get out and take photographers while using the knowledge gained in class so that you can capture that great shot. Good luck and get out there.

Photography Classroom Environment:
The photography classroom is a safe place where you can work hard, learn, and reach your potential. It is important that we all show respect for each other, the classroom, and the materials. School policy and teacher instructions are to be followed at all times. Because inappropriate behavior detracts from the classroom experience for everyone, I expect all students to conduct themselves
in a responsible manner, both academically and socially. Please allow each person to finish speaking before speaking yourself. I value cultural diversity, individual differences, and a range of academic talents. Name calling, harassment, and insubordination of any kind will not be tolerated.
Photography Classroom Policies:
- Absolutely NO cell phones are to be visible/heard in class.
- Students arriving late or tardy for class must sign in with me. If they do not sign in, they risk the possibility of being marked absent. Any discrepancy in attendance must be cleared up within 2 days of the occurrence.
- Late work will only receive full credit when proper documentations is provided and the following format is followed:
- Obtain any notes that you may have missed if the absence occurred on a lecture day.
- Obtain any photographer handouts that may have been distributed during your absence.
- Turn in any work that may have been due if the absence occurred on a due date.
